Media
experts have underscored the need of making government and private
media inclusive. At an interaction organized by Press Council Nepal on
‘Status of Women Journalists and Challenges They Face’ on Thursday, the
speakers said the media houses must have proportional participation of
women, dalit, Madhesi, and indigenous. On the occasion, Council Chairman
Borna Bahadur Karki, expressed worry why Nepali media have little
participation of women. Time has come to make media women friendly, he
added. He appealed to all media to implement Journalist’s Code of
Conduct 2016. Chief Editor at the Gorkhapatra daily, Pushkar Mathema,
said a separate reservation system should be put in place to ensure
women’s participation in media. Women journalists of new generation must
be encouraged to retain the journalism profession, he added.
Paper presenters duo Subechha Bindu Tuladhar and Meera Rajbhandari
Amatya said- first, it is difficult to attract women in media, and
second, it is difficult to retain them in this profession. Every media
house should implement the provision of minimum remuneration to working
journalists, they stressed. Amrita Lamsal opined that Nepali media have
brought more negative news than the positive ones while making stories
in terms of women issues. The government has fixed the minimum wage of
Rs 19,500 to the working journalists at national media while Rs 14,400
to the workers at other media
