SANTIAGO, CHILE — Two lions were killed after attacking a man who stripped naked and jumped into their enclosure in an apparent suicide attempt in Chile early on Saturday.

The man climbed over the fence and took off his clothes before approaching the lions, according to a statement posted on the Santiago Metropolitan Zoo's Facebook page.

It all started when Franco Luis Ferrada, 20, climbed on top of the lion pen and then forced his way into the cage. Witnesses said the lions ignored Ferrada at first, but attacked after he taunted them.

Zookeepers tried to hose the lions down at first, and then tried firing a tranquilizer dart, but hit Ferrada in the neck instead of the animals.

As the lions continued to attack the man, a zookeeper was forced to open fire with live rounds and kill the two lions in front of a large crowd of zoogoers.

Ferrada was taken to a local health clinic in critical condition with injuries to his head and pelvis.

A suicide note was discovered in his clothes, according to Chilean media reports.
